Poll: Young White Americans Fleeing Democrat Party

A new poll has found that millennials, especially white millennials, are leaving the Democratic Party.

An online survey conducted by Reuters/Ipsos of more than 16,000 registered voters between the ages of 18 and 34 revealed that their support for Democrats over Republicans in the Senate and House of Representatives fell by about 9 percent over the past two years to 46 percent.

The new Reuters/Ipsos poll surveyed voters during the first three months of 2018 and also during the same period in 2016.

The poll found that young white Americans, who favored Democrats over Republicans in 2016 by a 47 to 33 percent margin, have expressed more support for Republicans in 2018. Thirty-nine percent favor Republicans, and 39 percent favor Democrats.

Young white men now favor Republicans over Democrats by a margin of 46 to 37 percent, the poll found.

The economy is partially a reason for the shift. Two years ago, young voters said that Democrats had a better plan by a 12-point margin, and now, according to the poll, Democrats only have a two-point advantage over Republicans.

The poll results come amid the viral “Walk Away” videos that show ex-Democrats telling stories of why they left the party.

New York-based stylist Brandon Straka, who championed the movement on social media, explains why he left.

“For years now, I have watched as the left has devolved into intolerant, inflexible, illogical, hateful, misguided, ill-informed, un-American, hypocritical, menacing, callous, ignorant, narrow-minded, and at times blatantly fascistic behavior and rhetoric,” Straka says in the video.

The clip has been viewed more than a million times.
