[xtypo_dropcap]E[/xtypo_dropcap]uropean police targeted 48 sites in a series of raids, arresting 10 people involved in illegal file-sharing networks across Europe, BBC reported.

The countries targeted by police include the Netherlands, Hungary, Britain, and Czech Republic. Out of the 10 arrests, five were in Belgium, while the others were in Norway and Sweden.

The raids are the result of a two-year investigation coordinated by the Belgian police.

The alleged leaders of four file-sharing networks are suspected of computer fraud, hacking, and piracy.

Swedish prosecutors said the target of the raids was “The Scene,” a network for obtaining movies before their release on DVD.

“File-sharing operations are no longer centralized and any server is only ever going to be a cog in the wheel,” said Mark Mulligan, analyst for the research company Forrester, according to BBC.

In the last few months, illegal file-sharing has been taken more seriously by authorities worldwide, and lawmakers are creating harsher punishments to deter criminals.
