Police say a man shot and killed himself inside Yuba Sutter Mall in Northern California on Sunday.
The Yuba City Police Department said it got a phone call from the “Yuba Sutter Mall security who advised a white adult male, believed to be in his 60s, had walked into the mall carrying a rifle,” according to a press release posted by the City of Yuba City.
Mall security said the armed man sat down on a bench near a JCPenney, T-Mobile, and Zumiez. When police arrived, they attempted to talk him out of shooting.
“The male subject subsequently took his own life with his rifle,” the press release stated.
As a result, people were evacuated from the mall, which is still closed as of 2 p.m. local time.
The name and identity of the slain man will be released by the Sutter County Coroner’s Office later.
No other people or police officers were injured.
