Several groups are urging anyone with information to come forward after police found an 8-month-old pitbull hanging from a tree in Long Island.
The dog’s body was found in a wooded area in Bellport, New York.
The Guardians of Rescue and the Suffolk County SPCA are both offering $3,000 for information on the crime.
The Guardians in a Facebook post called the hanging a “horrible act.”
“Unfortunately any individual that can do something of this nature is capable of a committing a more horrific crime,” added Roy Gross, chief of the SPCA. “There is a strong correlation between animal abuse, domestic violence and child abuse.”
New York State law stipulates felony animal cruelty charges for any person who intentionally kills a companion animal.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722. All calls will be kept confidential.
