A police department in California shared an emotional picture showing an officer saying goodbye to a dying K-9 dog.

Griffen, a 7-year-old Belgian Malinois, suffered from an undisclosed medical condition and ultimately died over the weekend, reported Fox 13.

Griffen’s handler, Officer Chancellor and his family were on hand when the dog died.

Other members of the department were also present.

The emotional picture shows Chancellor hugging the dog.

“CVPD lost a trusted partner, K9 Griffen. It was a hard day for all of us, especially Griffen’s handler and best friend, Officer Chancellor,” wrote the Chula Vista Police Department on Twitter.

“May you #RIP, Griffen. Thank you for your service to our Department and the city of #ChulaVista.”

“It is hard to overstate the bond that a K-9 and his handler have when working long hours in dangerous situations. CVPD’s law enforcement family extends deepest sympathies to his partner officer,” the department stated.

Griffen worked alongside Chancellor mostly during the night shift, and he was also a frequent guest at public events.

K-9s work alongside officers across the nation, including at airports.
