ROCKLIN, Calif.  — A 14-year-old boy in northern California has been charged with murder after the death of his 13-year-old sister.

The Sacramento Bee reports that police say 13-year-old Ashley Wood died on July 19 after an apparent assault at her family’s Rocklin home. State attorney general’s office spokeswoman Brenda Gonzalez says the brother denied the allegation in a closed hearing in juvenile court.

Gonzalez says the judge has been asked to determine whether the brother should be tried as an adult. A hearing is set for September 9.

The Sacramento Bee hasn’t identified the brother because he is charged as a juvenile.

Wood’s body was found in the family home last Tuesday. The boy ran from the house but police say he was found in a field about a mile away.

“Given our strong emotional connection to Mr. Wood and his family it is legally impossible for us to prosecute this case,” the district attorney’s stated, reported The Los Angeles Times. “With the Attorney General handling the criminal case, it will allow our office to focus on giving Mr. Wood and his family the same love and support that he has given to crime victims during his 18 years of service to our county.”
