ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—“Fabulous dancing and I love the scenery,” said David Muench, renowned landscape and nature photographer, after seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts at Popejoy Hall on March 6.

Shen Yun, based in New York, travels the world purveying the divinely inspired, 5,000 year-old Chinese culture. The performance draws on the myriad virtues in the culture, such as benevolence and wisdom, and features stories and legends from across the vast land and its many dynasties and eras.

“I love the spirit of it,” said Mr. Muench. He appreciated the digital backdrops which enhance the dancers and help to transport the audience into different realms.

Ruth Rudner, the wife of Mr. Muench and an acclaimed author, joined him at the performance.

Windstone: Natural Arches, Bridges and Other Openings, is one of many books written by Mrs. Rudner, with accompanying photographs taken by her husband.

Mrs. Rudner said she also enjoyed the performance.

“I’m finding the performance quite extraordinary,” said Ms. Rudner.

A couple dances depict the situation in modern China, which is repressive under the communist regime. Because the regime nearly destroyed the traditional culture and opposes it, Shen Yun can’t currently perform there.

Falun Gong practitioners “have held firm to their beliefs and have continued to expose countless injustices through peaceful means,” states the website. “Their spirit of compassion and tolerance manifest the very essence of China’s 5,000-year-old divine culture.”

“It’s very brave,” said Ms. Rudner. “And the dancing is extraordinary.”
