PORT JERVIS—The City of Port Jervis, named after D&H Canal Engineer John B. Jervis and for its port on the D&H Canal, first became a village in the Town of Deerpark in 1853, then a city in 1907. Since then, paved streets have replaced dirt roads, cars have replaced horses, and highway and rail have replaced the D&H Canal as conduits for goods. What remains from that time are the dozens of houses and buildings that were built in the 1800s and early 1900s, many of them still in use today. The following are some of the houses built in the 1800s.
