The Philadelphia Phillies have signed starting pitcher Cole Hamels to a whopping six-year $144 million extension, according to a report on the team’s website.

The contract is the largest in Philadelphia sports history.

The deal, which includes a $6 million signing bonus, will pay him $19.5 million in 2013 and then $22.5 million each of the next five seasons. The Phillies then have a $20 million club option for 2019 or a vested option for $24 million if conditions are met.

The 28-year -old Hamels is 11-4 this season with a 3.23 ERA. For his career he’s 85-58 with a 3.38 ERA in 200 games.

Hamels was set to enter free agency after this season had the team not signed him.

“I really do feel this is the place I call home and the place I want to call home for a really long time,” said Hamels.
