The Philadelphia Phillies were in the midst of their loss to the St. Louis Cardinals Monday when a fan ran on to the field, interrupting the game. Security personnel along with local police chased down the young fan and shot him with a Taser. The whole rigmarole created a tremendous distraction for players as well as fans.

The unnamed Phillies fan ran onto the field making it all the way to the center field position before being surrounded by stadium security and a Philadelphia Police officer. The young fan was shot with a Taser gun by the police officer in front of a crowd of more than 40,000. The name of the fan who was tasered is being withheld due to his age, as the boy was only 17.

“This is the first time that a Taser gun has been used by Philadelphia police to apprehend a field jumper,“ said Phillies spokeswoman Bonnie Clark to CNN. ”The Police Department is investigating this matter and the Phillies are discussing with them whether in future situations this is an appropriate use of force under these circumstances.”

Phillies Fan Tasered: Video

The anonymous teen was wearing a Phillies hat and a red shirt when he went on to the field. The boy is seen waving a white towel around while running, and then suddenly going limp and hitting the grass. It was hard to see from the stands and on television but the boy was shot with a Taser gun.

It is unclear exactly what the fan will be charged with. Some fans are saying that the use of a Taser on a minor was excessive. Others are saying that it was perfectly justified. The details of the mishap may end up in a Philadelphia court room.
