Heavy rains continue to cause major flooding and landslides in the Philippines.
According to the Filipino National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, more than 4,000 residents have been evacuated from their homes in the provinces of Albay and Sorsogon.
Two people were killed when they attempted to cross an overflowing spillway on Wednesday.
Albay Governor Joey Salceda said an 80-year-old woman and her 50-year-old son were swept away by flood waters as they tried to reach an evacuation center, according to AFP.
Salceda said that despite the apparent danger, some villagers are insisting upon returning to their houses to watch over their property or get personal items.
The government has been evacuating residents from flood-prone areas since before Christmas, with more evacuations probable due to rain forecasted into the New Year.
"We are right now transferring a whole village—533 people—to an evacuation site," Salceda told AFP.
He said the Albay government will provide food and entertainment for the evacuees to celebrate the New Year and to encourage people not to leave evacuation centers.
