Philip D. Chism, a 14-year-old boy, was charged with raping and killing Danvers High School teacher Colleen Ritzer last month before he dumped her body near the school, officials said.
Boston.com reported that Chism was indicted by an Essex County jury on first-degree murder charges.
He allegedly killed Ritzer when she stayed after school to talk to him about an upcoming test, the newspaper reported.
He was indicted as an adult on the murder charge and was charged as a minor for aggravated rape and armed robbery. He allegedly stole Ritzer’s credit cards.
The Danvers school board held a moment of silence for Ritzer this week.
“The world, for better or worse, is sometimes a violent and unfair place,” said School Committee Chairman Eric Crane at a meeting earlier this week, according to the Salem News. “As wonderful a community as Danvers is, we are not immune from the horror that sometimes inserts itself into our world.”
