[xtypo_dropcap]F[/xtypo_dropcap]or the second year in a row, an American athlete has won the Philadelphia Marathon with three of the top ten male finishers and two of the top ten female finishers from Pennsylvania.
Daniel Vassallo, 25, from Massachusetts won the 17th Annual 2010 Philadelphia Marathon in 2:21.28 amidst around 11,000 runners on Nov. 21. His compatriot, David Bedoya, also from Massachusetts, placed second at 2:23.37.
Although Vassallo won the Maine Marathon in 2007 at the age of 22, he said in an AP report that this victory was the biggest of his career.
“I was kind of overcome by emotion a couple times today,” he said. “At 24 miles, I was like, ‘Gosh, I’m going to do this.’ At 26, when they were playing the music (Chariots of Fire) and calling my name, I got very emotional, especially with all I’ve been through this year.”
Mariska Kramer from the Netherlands won the women’s field with a time of 2:38.55, followed by Ramilia Burangulova at 2:40.12.
The top male and female finishers each received $3,500.
