Pet Food Recall: Kroger Says its Pet Food May Have Aflatoxin

Pet food recall: Kroger grocery stores announced a pet food recall for pet food that may contain the poisonous aflatoxin.
|Updated:
Grocery chain Kroger Co. issued a pet food recall on Saturday after discovering some brands of dog and cat foods it carries may contain a substance that can sicken pets.

The recall affects Food 4 Less in the Chicago area, Kroger, Jay C, Hilander, Owen’s, Pay Less, and Scott’s stores in Illinois and Indiana, and stores in 15 other states, according to a Kroger press release.

Some pet food products may contain aflatoxin, a naturally-occuring chemical by-product produced by a fungus found on crops such as corn.

Owners whose pets show any signs of illness, slower movement, or reluctance to eat, and sometimes a yellowish tint to the eyes or gums and severe or bloody diarrhea, are advised to consult a veterinarian immediately.

Customers who bought products including various-sized packages of Pet Pride Cat Food, Pet Pride Tasty Blend Poultry & Seafood Cat Food, Pet Pride Kitten Formula Food, Old Yeller Chunk Dog Food, Kroger Value Cat Food, and Kroger Value Chunk Dog Food that have sell-by dates of Oct. 23 or 24 can return them for a full refund or replacement.

In addition to observing the pets’ symptoms and behaviors, RealTime Laboratories introduced a test to determine whether family pets have been contaminated by aflatoxin.

According to a RealTime Laboratories press release, a similar contamination led to the deaths of hundreds of dogs throughout the country in 2006.

“Our tests have helped many pet owners determine if their animals are exposed to aflatoxins and other harmful mycotoxins,” said David Murcott, CEO of RealTime Laboratories, in a statement. “This helps alleviate a tremendous amount of anxiety in a pet owner and gives veterinarians the information they need for diagnosis and treatment.”

Pet owners can call Kroger toll-free at (800) 632-6900 for questions.
