As the wildfires raged out of control in Texas, Gov. Rick Perry was forced to leave the presidential campaign trail and involve himself in the response effort.

The governor’s office deployed an elite search team, the Texas Task Force 1, to deal with Bastrop County.

Perry urged Texans who have been evacuated from their homes to register with the American Red Cross and stay out of harm’s way.

“I cannot emphasize enough to Texans in the impacted areas the importance of heeding all warnings from local officials, especially evacuation orders, as these fires are mean, swift, and highly dangerous,” Perry said in a statement.

The Texas Forest Service on Wednesday said that it has responded to 19 new fires affecting 1,490 acres. In the past week, it has responded to 172 fires spanning 135,051 acres.

Especially hot and dry conditions have pervaded throughout Texas, as the state copes with the worst drought in decades.
