A massive pile-up on the Pennsylvania Turnpike on Sunday afternoon ended with at least one person dead and involved about 50 vehicles.
Amid heavy snow in the region, the crash snarled traffic on the turnpike.
Officials said that the pile-up started when a motorist who was involved in a minor accident got out of his car and was hit and killed, reported NBC.
The multi-car crash closed the westbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike from Downingtown to Morgantown.
The accident happened around 12:30 p.m. on the westbound turnpike at mile marker 300 in the area of Morgantown.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission said traffic has re-started on the turnpike (I-76) but an area of congestion has formed due to the accident. The state’s 511 system said that congestion is east of exit 201, and exit 298.
Other accidents also happened on the turnpike in other areas.
The National Weather Service placed Philadelphia and extreme southeastern Pennsylvania under a winter storm warning, saying the region could get 3 to 6 inches of snow.
State transportation crews began putting a brine solution on major roadways on Saturday in anticipation of the storm.
