A massive pileup is snarling traffic on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Reading in Berks County, and a crash on Interstate 78 is also causing delays  on Thursday.

A few dozen vehicles, including semi trucks, appear to be involved in the Turnpike crash.

The I-78 crash is located in northern Berks County, said WFMZ. I-78 East is closed between mileposts 35 and 40, and the westbound side of the highway was shut down around milepost 40.

The westbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike between Morgantown (Exit 298) and Reading (Exit 286) have also been shut down.

According to WFMZ, about 44 people were injured in both crashes. Around 25 were transported to nearby hospitals.

The Kutztown Fire Company said that 13 victims were trapped in eight vehicles, and two had life-threatening injuries.

Officials in Berks County urged motorists to stay away from I-78.

Officials said that Thursday morning’s snow is the likely cause of the crash.

Reports said that 40 vehicles were involved in the I-78 crash, while 35 vehicles piled up on the Turnpike.

Lancaster City Mayor Rick Gray told LancasterOnline that road maintenance crews were out working to treat city roads at 9 a.m.

“This sort of caught us by surprise,” Gray said. “No one was anticipating an accumulation.”

READING, Pa. (AP) — A portion of the Pennsylvania Turnpike is shut down in snowy eastern Pennsylvania after a pileup involving what appears to be a couple dozen vehicles.

WPVI-TV in Philadelphia posted a photo of the turnpike accident online Thursday. Turnpike officials say all lanes westbound were shut down because of the accident between the Morgantown and Reading exits in Berks County.

There was no immediate word on injuries in the crash.

Meanwhile, WPVI says an accident has shut down Interstate 78 eastbound in Berks County between mileposts 35 and 40 in Lenhartsville.
