The Sudanese government signed a peace framework with a major rebel group the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM), an umbrella of 10 splinter fractions.

The agreement for talks and peace was signed by an adviser to Sudanese President and LJM leader El-Tijani El-Sissi in Doha on Thursday. Earlier this week, peace talks with the larger Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) had reached an impasse.

“This is an important step which will give momentum to peace efforts in Darfur,” said Sudanese Vice President Ali Osman Taha, according to AFP.

The U.N. estimates that 300,000 people have died and 2.7 million people have become homeless as a result of the conflict.

The Sudanese government is still seeking a peace deal with a faction of the Sudan Liberation Army, the other main opposition group. They have so far refused any negotiations with the Sudanese government.
