Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, was hospitalized in Texas after suffering a heart attack, while visiting the United States. A hospital spokeswoman confirmed that he is in good condition on Monday.

“Mr. Fayyad’s condition is good,” said Adrienne Lallo, a spokeswoman for Seton Medical Center in Austin, as quoted by Reuters.

Fayyad, an internationally respected former World Bank economist, had a heart attack on Sunday, while attending his son’s university graduation in Austin, Palestinian government spokesman, Ghassan Khatib, told Reuters.

According to an official statement cited by AFP, doctors determined that the prime minister’s “coronary artery was blocked.” Fayyad, a heavy smoker, underwent a cardiac catheterization on Monday to unblock his artery.

Fayyad, a former International Monetary Fund employee, has been prime minister since June 2007, after Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip.

However, his future as prime minister has been up in the air since a reconciliation deal struck this month between the Fatah movement of Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas and Hamas.

The plan calls for the creation of a transitional government as well as presidential and parliamentary elections within a year.

Hamas has expressed opposition to Fayyad’s leadership.
