ISLAMABAD— Pakistan will allow international aid groups to keep operating for another six months provided they register in the next three.
The move announced Tuesday comes after the government briefly shuttered the main office of Save the Children last week, accusing the group of violating its own charter, without elaborating. The Interior Ministry later reversed the order, also without explanation. Other aid groups feared being similarly targeted.
Save the Children has been under intense scrutiny in Pakistan due to a local suspicions the organization was connected to the May 2011 killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden. The CIA used a vaccination campaign run by a Pakistani doctor to obtain DNA samples in Abbottabad, where bin Laden had been hiding.
