Oxford Tornado Warning: Mississippi’s Lafayette County Gets Warning (Photos)

A tornado warning was issued for Oxford, Miss., on Monday afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued the warning at 3 p.m. CDT.

It says: “Until 3:30 pm CDT. At 3:01 pm CDT, National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm producing a tornado near Springdale, or 6 miles southwest of Holly Springs National Forest, moving northeast at 55 mph. Locations In the warning include but are not limited to Oxford and Holly Springs National Forest. This warning also includes areas near Sardis Lake.”

The agency also gave recommended actions for the storm and potential tornado.

“The safest place to be during a tornado is in a storm shelter. If no storm shelter is available, seek shelter on the lowest floor of the building in an interior hallway or room such as a closet. Use blankets or pillows to cover your body and always stay away from windows,” it says. “If in mobile homes or vehicles, evacuate them and get inside a substantial shelter.
