Six sex offenders are living within 1,000 feet of New York City schools, according to an analysis done by State Senate Co-Leader Jeff Klein’s office.

The Bronx Democrat looked into the state’s sex offender registry after he found out a sex offender moved within 1,000 feet of a Bronx school. The school was constructed in September. The man’s address was approved by the Department of Corrections and the Department of Criminal Justice Services. The new schools address was not in their database.

“These mistakes are leaving entire communities vulnerable to the type of disturbed, dangerous criminals who often strike more than once,” said Klein in a press release.

Investigation of the sex offender registry also found another 130 offenders’ zip codes were incorrect.

Sen. Klein has introduced legislation to require quarterly update of the department’s school database.

The Department of Corrections responded in a statement that, “no sex offender for whom the Sexual Assault Reform Act (SARA) conditions apply will be released from a DOCCS facility unless we have verified that his proposed residence is compliant with the SARA law.”‎
