Over 200 people are feared dead after clashes erupted outside of the central Nigerian city of Jos.

The clashes, according to a BBC report, are over religious differences between the northern part of Nigeria, which is predominantly Muslim, and the south, which is predominantly Christian. Jos lies in the central part of the West African nation, which in recent years, has been subject to ethnic and religious riots.

The Nigerian government has put the military on full alert after the attacks, which occurred on Sunday morning. Several smaller communities outside of Jos were assailed by men wielding machetes. The men fired guns outside of the village and then attacked people who ran out of their homes, according to a witness. In January, 200 people were killed in a similar conflict between Muslims and Christians.
