Orange County Plans Super Vaccination Sites

Orange County is preparing to create super COVID-19 vaccination sites as it looks to amp its inoculation efforts.

The point-of-dispensing (POD) sites are expected to provide thousands of vaccinations per day when they become operational. An exact launch date has not been released.

The county is working with the Orange County Fire Authority on the initiative, called Operation Independence.

An incident management team has been created to secure locations and erect the POD sites.

“Establishing the Operation Independence [management team] will reduce and eliminate barriers to vaccine access for Orange County’s residents,” Supervisor Donald Wagner said in a press release. “This is important for the taxpayers we serve as it enables us to maintain fiscal accountability and avoid duplication of efforts at the city level.”

Officials said the county will likely need five super PODs, which will become operational as they are approved, staffed, and have vaccines available. Site locations have not yet been determined; the county will take a phased approach to opening the centers.
