One of the oldest county fairs in New York State is back again for 12 days at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Middletown. There will be carnival rides and games, vendors, demos, exhibits, and live concerts, plus Demolition Derby and other events at the adjacent Speedway.

The Playhouse at Museum Village is presenting Neil Simon’s “The Sunshine Boys” directed by Michael Frohnhoefer. Al and Willie as “Lewis and Clark” were top-billed vaudevillians
for over forty years. Now they aren’t even speaking. When CBS requests them for a “History of Comedy” retrospective, a grudging reunion brings the two back together, along with a flood of memories, miseries, and laughs. Learn to Play the Harmonica

This is a step-by-step program for beginners with harmonicist Patti Gessner. No musical talent or experience is required. The harmonica, also called harp, French harp, blues harp, and mouth organ, is a free reed wind instrument used primarily in Blues, American Folk, Jazz, Country, and Rock-n-Roll. Participants can bring their own harmonica (key of C) or pay an extra $5 to purchase one at the class. Must pre-register by calling, emailing, or registering at the library in person.

Joseph Brant Bus Tour

The tour will follow the July 20, 1779 route taken by Joseph Brant and his Tory Raiders as they burned and looted the valley. Some of the events to be related by re-enactors are: Major Decker and Willahousa Cave, Jeremiah Van Auken and the Painted Aprons at Black Rock School, Fort Van Auken’s successful stand, The slave who saved James Swartwout’s life, and Cooking at Fort Decker. Reservations are required. Forms are available on the website, at Town Hall, or the Deerpark Museum. A box lunch will be available at the end of the tour for $3. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Talk: Loyalists of Newburgh

Not all colonists were revolutionaries, some remained loyal to the British Crown. Kieran O'Keefe will discuss the Loyalists of Newburgh during the American Revolution. This talk looks at the origins and composition of the Loyalist community, considers their war experiences including the persecution they faced from Newburgh rebels, and finally examines the Loyalists post-war exile in Canada.

Backyard Series: Everything Lavender

Lavender is becoming increasingly grown for the production of its essential oil, which comes from the distillation of the flower spikes of certain species of the plant. Lavender oil is believed to have antiseptic and anti- inflammatory properties, which can be used to help heal minor burns and bug bites,
and some research has revealed that the essential oil of lavender may be useful for treating anxiety, insomnia, and depression. Linda Werner of Orange County Cooperative Extension will share the broad range of uses of the lavender in gardening. Program requires pre-registration. The schedule is subject to change. Historic Tavern Trail of the Hudson Valley: Painter’s Restaurant
