My grandparents landed on Ellis Island in 1902 with their 1-year-old son, my father, in their arms. Twenty-seven years later, in 1929, I was born. They had fled what was taking place in czarist Russia, with the Cossacks and other government forces running wild, attacking, raping, and killing Jews.
