Ontario is powering up its charging stations to herald the age of electric cars.

The government of Ontario announced on Tuesday that it will increase the number of charging stations, making electric cars a more convenient option than they were before.

The province will be offering an $80 million fund for this project. Public and private sectors are encouraged to come forward with proposals for building charging stations.

The government will choose which projects to fund, and provide seed money to them during the period of development.

“We’re taking the next step to ensure car-charging stations are in the right place to power the next generation of vehicles,” Ontario Premiere Dalton McGuinty said in a press release.

“Just as we worked hard to become North America’s number one producer of cars, we’re working hard to become number one in North America when it comes to clean energy. Today’s announcement takes us one step closer to our vision.”

Expanding charging stations is just one more addition to Ontario’s incentives for buying electric cars, the press release noted. The province already offers monetary incentives of $5,000-$8,500 and allows electric car drivers to use Ontario’s High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes.

The provincial government aims to have 1 in 20 Ontario cars be electrically powered by 2020.

Toyota to Build Electric Car in Woodstock, ON

The expansion of charging stations comes on the heels of another electric car boost for Ontario. Toyota Canada Inc. announced its plans to build the RAV4 EV (electric vehicle) in its plant at Woodstock, Ontario.

The project has drawn funding from both the federal and provincial governments. The government of Canada is offering a repayable contribution of $70.84 million, and Ontario is investing the same amount.

Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for Science and Technology, described the RAV4 EV as “the first highway-capable electric vehicle to be produced in Canada and the first electric vehicle to be produced by Toyota outside of Japan.”

Sandra Pupatello, Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development and Trade, said that Toyota’s decision to produce in Woodstock was a result of Ontario’s investment in green technology.

Woodstock, a southwestern Ontario community, has a population of 38,000. The electric car will be built on the same line as the gasoline version of the RAV4.

Toyota will be building the RAV4 EV jointly with Tesla Motors Inc., a Silicon Valley-based electric car manufacturer. Toyota will pay Tesla around $100 million to supply the electric powertrain, which will be built in California and shipped into Canada for assembly.
