The Ontario Government is investing $75 million in the Hospital for Sick Children’s (SickKids) Research and Learning Tower.

Deb Matthews, Ontario’s Minister of Health and Long-term Care, was at SickKids on Monday to meet with patients before announcing the funding. She stressed that the Research and Learning Tower would lead to important innovations in health care.

Also on hand to make the announcement was Glen Murray, the provincial Minister of Research and Innovation.

“Research saves lives, and today’s discoveries are tomorrow’s medical miracles,” Murray said.

The Research and Learning Tower, standing 21 storeys above Bay Street and Elm Street, “will be a hub where researchers and learners can congregate and share ideas to transform the current state of child health care,” the tower’s website states.

The new facility will provide for specialized research needs, while stairways and shared areas link different science disciplines together to encourage cross-collaboration.

A total of $400 million is required for this project. SickKids has currently raised over $50 million in private sector funding, and hopes to increase that figure to $200 million.

The Research and Learning Tower is set to be completed in 2013.
