British Columbians can now apply online to receive a COVID-19 benefit of up to $1,000.
Applications for the B.C. Recovery Benefit, a one time, tax-free payment of up to $1,000 for families and single-parent families who have an annual income under $125,000, opened on Friday morning. The two groups will receive a reduced benefit amount if they have an annual earning of up to $175,000.
Single people can receive $500 if they make less than $62,500 annually. Those earning up to $87,500 a year qualify for a reduced benefit amount.
To apply for the benefit, applicants will need to provide their 2019 income tax returns, 2019 income tax notice of assessment, and if applicable, their spouses’ 2019 income tax notice of assessment, social insurance number, direct deposit information, and B.C. driver’s licence.
Those without internet access can apply over the phone toll-free at 1-833-882-0020 starting Dec. 21 from Monday to Friday—excluding statutory holidays—from 7.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. pacific time. In total, there will be up to 350 call centre agents to answer questions or complete the applications.
However, the province suggested people apply online to avoid any potential delays. Most applicants can expect to receive the payment within five business days upon completion of their applications.
