Olympic Torch spacewalk: Russian astronauts will take the Olympic Torch for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics onto the International Space Station for a spacewalk.
The state Federal Space Agency told Russia Today that the torch will not be lit as flames are prohibited on the ISS.
But other than that, “it will be the same as the torch at the Olympics,” Vitaly Davydov, the deputy head of the space agency, was quoted by RT as saying.
Russian astronauts Oleg Kotov and Sergey Ryazansky will carry out the spacewalk with the torch.
The torch will be sent to space in November and is expected to return on Nov. 12.
“It will not be a copy but exactly the same as the torch at the Olympics,” Davydov also said, according to Discovery.com.
The torch walk is slated to begin Oct. 7, 2013, and will last 123 days, traveling more than 34,797 miles. It will be carried by around 14,000 people, according to the Sochi Games’ website.
