NEW YORK—The old South Ferry loop station opened on Thursday, extending train service on the 1 line to the tip of Manhattan for the first time since Superstorm Sandy last fall.

The MTA spent approximately $2 million to renovate the old station for daily use, including adding moveable platform edge extenders, like those found at Grand Central.

The MTA is asking customers to enter the old loop station via the mezzanine from the main entrance adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

Nearly 15 million gallons of water poured into the $500 million South Ferry station, which opened in 2009.The South Ferry Station will be closed for a three-year rebuilding.

South Ferry is the last stop on the No. 1 train, providing a critical link for commuters taking the Staten Island ferry.
