NEW YORK—Police say a 19-year-old man was critically wounded when he refused to drop a knife and an officer shot him.

It happened shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday in the Bronx.

The New York Police Department says officers responded after a woman reported being assaulted by her boyfriend, Shamel Jones. Police located Jones and tried to talk to him.

Police say Jones fled to a nearby building and went into an apartment, where he began brandishing a knife. When Jones refused to drop it, one officer, a lieutenant, tried pepper spraying him. Police say Jones continued to advance on the police and an officer fired once, hitting Jones in his lower back.

Jones has been arrested and charged with assault, menacing and other offenses. A knife was recovered.
