With just two weeks left in the campaign, a new poll released on Tuesday by the Wall Street Journal and NBC News shows 52 per cent of voters favor Barack Obama and 42 per cent favor John McCain.

Tuesday’s Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby daily tracking poll also showed a big lead for Obama with 50.3 per cent of voters supporting him compared with 42.4% supporting McCain.

Both polls, which were conducted separately, showed big gains by Obama among independents, and even accounting for generous margins of error, Obama has a confident lead.

The McCain campaign stands unfazed however, with Sen. McCain and his running mate Gov. Palin maintaining that they like being “the underdog.”

The poll reports for this campaign have been incessant and have sometimes bordered on contradictory, but in recent days Obama has been pulling into the lead across the board.

The Wall Street Journal/NBC News Poll interviewed 1,159 registered voters, and the Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby interviewed 1,200. The sample size is considered sufficient to bring the margin of error below 3 percent in either direction.

In a surprise move on Monday Sen. Obama called off his campaign stops for the rest of the week. Instead of being out on the road solidifying his lead, he is in Hawaii visiting his 85-year-old grandmother who has just suffered a broken hip on top of existing ailments.

Madelyn Payne Dunham, who helped raise a young Barack Obama after his father left the family, is reportedly out of the hospital and recovering at home where Obama’s sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, cares for her.

Just because Obama has cancelled his personal appearances does not mean that his campaign is on hold however. His running mate Sen. Joe Biden is still on the stump and with over $150 million raised last month, the campaign will continue to blanket the country with advertisements.
