Obama Campaign Staffer Collapses and Dies in Chicago

A campaign worker with President Barack Obama’s re-election team died at the Chicago campaign headquarters on Friday.

Alex Okrent, a 29-year-old Obama staffer since 2004, collapsed and suddenly died in the morning. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead there, and his autopsy was inconclusive, according to the Chicago Tribune.

His father, Mike Okrent, told the Chicago Tribune that his son “should have had a long, bright future.”

Obama, via his campaign Twitter account said, “A beloved member of our campaign family, Alex Okrent, passed away today. Our prayers are with his loved ones. We will miss you, Alex. -bo.”

Okrent was with Obama since when he was a senator, and was a staffer when Obama launched his election bid in for the 2008 presidency.

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney tweeted his condolences. “Prayers are with Alex’s loved ones and the entire Obama campaign team,” he said.
