An article that says President Barack Obama will “forgive” all student loans is from a satire news website.

More than 220,000 people “liked” and shared the Daily Currant article on Facebook, with many believing it’s real.

“President Obama announced a plan today to forgive 100 percent of all federal student loans in the country,” it reads. “‘Just because someone borrowed a bunch of money doesn’t mean they have to pay it back,’ he explained to a friendly crowd at Scranton University. ‘This isn’t 19th century England. This is America. And in America we’ve always believed in second chances,’” reads a fake quote in the article.

The Daily Currant has a disclaimer and says it’s satire.

“The Daily Currant is an English language online satirical newspaper that covers global politics, business, technology, entertainment, science, health and media. It is accessible from over 190 countries worldwide - now including South Sudan,” it reads. “Our mission is to ridicule the timid ignorance which obstructs our progress, and promote intelligence - which presses forward.”

The disclaimer continues: “Our stories are purely fictional. However they are meant to address real-world issues through satire and often refer and link to real events happening in the world.”

A number of people retweeted the article--published in August--on Monday.

“Probably the best thing our president has done in his two terms,” wrote one user on Twitter. https://twitter.com/MarkJacNick
