The Staten Island Ferry crashed into the pier at the Whitehall Street Terminal in Lower Manhattan on Thursday.

Sources told the Staten Island Advance that the ferry crashed after it lost power.

Preliminary reports indicate no injuries or damage to the boat, the Department of Transportation said.

The department said via Twitter that “due to a mechanical issue, the Staten Island Ferry will be operating on a modified schedule during the PM rush hour today.”

The ferry had been on its way to Staten Island before turning around after power issues.

“So I was on the ferry heading to the island when all of the sudden there was an announcement saying we were going back to Manhattan,” said Instagram user theonlyauel. “The boat turned around and straight up crashed into the dock and pushed the whole thing back.”

Kelsey Grice, who was aboard the ferry, said via Twitter that the ferry’s captain told riders via the PA system to brace for impact right before the ferry crashed into the dock.

“Wildest ferry ever,” she said.

Ed V., an Oakwood resident, described the impact to the Advance:

“They told everybody to get down,” he said. “We hit it really, really hard.”

“I don’t know if they had sufficient power to stop the boat, and the boat cracked the pier pretty hard,” he added. “I think people were freaking out. You could see a lot of scared faces.”
