NEW YORK—The New York City school district will expand by 78 schools next fall, bringing the total to 1,821, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Tuesday.
The new schools will serve nearly 10,000 new students next fall, expanding to 32,000 when they reach to capacity. Seven career and technical education schools are part of the expansion. Two new high schools, in partnership with CUNY, will offer grades nine through 14, giving students a high school diploma and an Associate Degree.
“Our Administration has created a record number of schools and programs for our students – which have helped lead to record gains,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg in a statement. “We still have more work to do, and with our new schools and school leaders, we’ll continue to provide our children with the opportunities they deserve.”
The Mayor made the announcement at the future site of Energy Tech in Queens, which will partner with Con Edison and National Grid to provide career and technical education. The curriculum, developed by Con Edison and National Grid will expose students to the energy industry, one of the nation’s fastest growing sectors.
Since 2002, the mayor has opened 656 new schools.
