NEW YORK—The federal education department awarded $6 million to three school districts in New York City as part of its desegregation efforts.
The grant is going towards Magnet schools in Brooklyn and Jamaica, Queens. Magnet schools are operated under a court-ordered or federally-approved voluntary desegregation plan.
“Magnet schools help increase public school options for parents and students in communities across the country,” U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan stated in a press release. “These grants will help students gain access to challenging curricula that will help prepare them for college and 21st century careers.”
A total of $90 million was awarded to school districts nationwide.
