NEW YORK—Twenty-five New York City grocery stores were fined in 2010 for pricing violations, including overcharging customers, using inaccurate scales, and mislabeling products.

The fines nearly add up to a total of $400,000, according to the New York Post, citing the city’s Department of Consumer Affairs.

“I do know that the industry is not taking the incredibly low compliance rate seriously,” said the Department of Consumer Affairs Commissioner Jonathan Mintz. “Whether they’re enjoying the rewards or simply have a high tolerance for error, you'd have to ask them.”

Seventeen of the 25 stores are located in Brooklyn, three in State Island, two in Manhattan, and three in the Bronx. Queens is the only borough that had no fine records on the list. The store that received the highest fine is Pioneer on Lafayette Ave., Brooklyn, with a total of $11,460.
