World’s Greatest Escape Artist
Voted the “world’s greatest escape artist” by his peers, Thomas Solomon, will present his full-evening show as the feature of the Society of American Magicians 102nd Annual Salute to Magic on Saturday, May 14, at El Museo del Barrio. Solomon’s performance alternates between dangerous escapes and baffling sleight-of-hand illusions. Also included are beautiful assistants, dramatic sets, and high-impact light and sound design.

Rarely Seen 18th Century Pastel Portraits on View
Although pastel works are technically just drawings, 18th century pastel portraits are often highly finished, large, brightly colored, and elaborately framed, evoking oil paintings, according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Forty pastels from the collections at the Met and other museums, and from private collections in Boston and New York, will go on display beginning Tuesday, May 17, through August. “The powdery pastel crayons are particularly suited to capturing the fleeting expressions that characterize the most life-like portraits,” according to the Met.
