9/11 Commemoration

In its ninth year, the 9/11 commemoration ceremony will take place on Saturday, Sept. 11 at Zuccotti Park, next to ground zero. The ceremony will pause at four times to mark when each tower was hit and fell. The first moment of silence will take place at 8:46 a.m., when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower. Around sunset, the “Tribute in Light” will shine through the New York City sky in two columns to commemorate the nearly 3,000 victims that lost their lives.

The National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum is set to open next year on Sept. 11 to mark the first decade after the attacks. A preview site located at 20 Vesey St. will open this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for family members, survivors, and others impacted by the attacks to visit.

Brooklyn Bridge Swim

Before the water gets icy cold, come down to swim across the East River between Brooklyn and Manhattan under one of the world’s most famous bridges. Starting at Brooklyn Bridge Park at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, swimmers will thrust for 0.6 miles (1 km) to reach the other side of the channel at East River Park in Manhattan. About 20 minutes after the last swimmer gets on shore, awards will be presented in seven categories to the outstanding participants. Last year on the same day, the water temperature was 74.84 degrees.

30th Annual Antique Motorcycle Show

It’s a good time for the oldies. The 30th annual Antique Motorcycle Show will display various makes and models of motorcycles that have been out of market for more than a decade. In addition to the display, families can enjoy music, farmhouse tours, hayrides, petting zoo, and food from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12 at Queens Farm Museum in Queens Farm Park. Admission is $5 per person.

Primary Election 2010

New York state will have its primary election from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday Sept. 14 to choose House, Senate, and other candidates for the Nov. 2 general election. Voters will mark their choices on a paper ballot with a pen or ballot-marking device and insert their ballot into a scanner. The scanner will tabulate the votes after the polls close on Election Day. No early voting is available and the unofficial election results will be posted on vote.nyc.ny.us.
