Handel’s Messiah at Carnegie Hall


Offering a signature interpretation of the favorite holiday work, the Masterwork Chorus and Orchestra will perform Handel’s “Messiah” at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, Dec. 19, at 2 p.m. The event will mark the company’s 245th full performance of “Messiah.”

Holiday Favorites at New York Public Library


If you need some holiday cheer, come to the “Deck the Halls!” concert on Sunday, Dec. 19, at 2:30 p.m. The performance will take place at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at New York Public Library for the Performing Arts’ Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center, located at 40 Lincoln Center Plaza. The concert will feature traditional holiday favorites presented by Harwood Management Vocal Artists.

Abridged ‘Magic Flute’ at Met Opera


Julie Taymor’s spellbinding production Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” returns in its popular abridged, English-language version for the holiday. The opera starts with handsome Prince Tamino getting lost in a distant land and being pursued by a serpent and goes on to unpack the cheerfulness and lightheartedness splendidly fit for the holiday season.

E-Waste Recycling Events


Don’t feel guilty about getting rid of your old electronics after getting new ones for Christmas. The Ecology Center will host its eighth annual After the Holidays E-waste Events throughout January 2011 to recycle the unwanted or broken gadgets, including computers, printers, cell phones, and power supplies. The center will host 10 collecting events, starting with the one at Union Square Park’s north plaza on Jan. 2 and ending with the one on West 62nd Street, between Columbus and Amsterdam avenues, on Jan. 23.

Shen Yun Performing Arts at Lincoln Center


Finish off your holiday season with an exhilarating performance by Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater. The world-touring show, which has been described as “a study in grace, wisdom, and the virtues,” runs from Jan. 6 to Jan. 15. Shen Yun brings on stage 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture and features classical Chinese dance, 3-D backdrops, and a live orchestra.
