A 100-year-old Bronx man shot himself in the leg on Thursday, according to police.
Pedro Detres was at his home on 162nd Street near Sheridan Avenue when he took out his unregistered .32-caliber revolver and it went off, hitting him in the thigh, NYPD reported.
The centenarian was taken to the hospital before being arrested for possession of a firearm. He was later released without bail.
His neighbor, Ricardo Rodriguez, 20, told the New York Daily News that he was at home sleeping after working a night shift, and although he'd heard the sound, he said it was so muffled he thought something heavy just fell on the floor.
Rodriguez’s grandfather, Carlos Millares, takes care of Detres when his home attendant cannot visit.
He was getting breakfast for Detres when the shot was fired, and when he went back to check on Detres, he discovered the gunshot wound.
Police came and fashioned a tourniquet around the leg to stop the bleeding while he was taken to Lincoln Hospital.
Rodriguez said Detres, who was born in March of 1917, has mentioned that he wants to die.
“We didn’t know he had a gun. But he’s fine, he’s not crazy or anything. He’s just a little eccentric. I don’t know why he did that,” Rodriguez told the Daily News.
A police source told the New York Post that the gun was not purchased legally, or recently.
“He just said he obtained it many, many years ago. God knows how long ago that was,” the source said.
Detres has no record of previously being arrested, according to DNA Info.
