NY Most Unionized State, Study Finds

NEW YORK—New York is the most unionized state in the nation, according to a new study by the City University of New York ,published on Wednesday. Overall, the state New York City has a 24.6 percent unionized workforce.

The large percentage of unions in New York state is mainly due to high unionization among government workers. The study found that 71.2 percent of government employees belong to a union. In the private sector, 13.8 percent belong to unions, which almost doubles the national average of 7.1 percent. Around two million people belong to unions in New York. This number is second only to California, the most populous state, which has 2.45 million.

Hawaii has the second highest rate at 23.5 percent, and Alaska is third at 22.3 percent. The least unionized state is North Carolina with 3.1 percent.
