NEW YORK—New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said his office recently sent letters to 75 nonprofit groups that raised money following Hurricane Sandy in an attempt to show donors where their money is going.
While he commended charities and donors for giving their time and money to help Sandy victims, Schneiderman said the move is an attempt to provide “transparency and accountability” to see that funds are properly used, according to a statement on Tuesday.
The nonprofits include the AARP Foundation, Occupy Sandy, the Food Bank for New York City, United Way, The Salvation Army, and others.
In the letter, the attorney general’s office is asking how much money was given to the charity, whether the donations were used entirely for Sandy-related relief, if the charity has surplus funds, if it is providing money to other organizations, and what services were provided to Sandy victims.
Once the information is handed over, Schneiderman said it will be published on the attorney general’s website.
