The NTSB intern who gave fake Asiana names was fired, it was reported Tuesday.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said the intern who gave fake and racially insensitive names of the Asiana Flight 214 pilots was fired, it confirmed. The Asiana passenger plane crash-landed at the San Francisco airport a week and a half ago, killing three people and injuring scores more.

The intern gave the names, including “Sum Ting Wong” and “Wi Tu Lo,” to Bay Area television station KTVU. The station later apologized for the gaffe and it said the NTSB confirmed the names.

“Earlier today, in response to an inquiry from a media outlet, a summer intern acted outside the scope of his authority when he erroneously confirmed the names of the flight crew on the aircraft,” the NTSB said, according to Reuters.

The agency added: “The National Transportation Safety Board apologizes for inaccurate and offensive names that were mistakenly confirmed as those of the pilots of Asiana flight 214, which crashed at San Francisco International Airport on July 6.”

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, KTVU issued an apology for publishing the names.

“We are reviewing our procedures to ensure this type of error does not happen again,” said KTVU general manager Tom Raponi.
