Novodevichy Monastery Fire: Photos Show Moscow Church, Not Kremlin, in Flames

The Novodevichy monastery in Moscow, Russia, caught on fire on Sunday night. Firefighters were deployed on the scene to put out the blaze.

Photos and videos the blaze were being shared on Twitter. Some Twitter users apparently thought it was the Kremlin that caught on fire, but it isn’t the case.

There has been no official confirmation that the monastery is on fire. However, The Moscow Times reported on the fire, describing it as “awful and unbelievable.” BuzzFeed reporter Max Seddon also said the monastery caught on fire.

He wrote on Twitter: “Most of the fire seems to be on the repair scaffolding, not the tower itself. Hope it stays that way.”

The Novodevichy monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is located approximately 4 miles from the Kremlin. It’s also known as the Novodevichy Convent or the the Bogoroditse-Smolensky Monastery.
