North Korea is suspected of having multiple uranium enrichment facilities like the one it disclosed last month, capable of producing highly enriched uranium fit for nuclear bombs, both the United States and South Korea acknowledged Tuesday.
In November, North Korea allowed U.S. experts to visit their operational uranium enrichment plant near the Yongbyon Nuclear Complex and found “what they saw did not come out of thin air. It certainly reflects work being done at at least one other site,” said spokesman for the State Department Philip Crowley.
Without going into details, he confirmed earlier reports of South Korea’s Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan saying “that there is a fair point” in the assumption of one of the visiting experts that another production site exists, AFP reported.
The experts found the plant was well built and appeared to be made for nuclear power production. However, it is thought that the technology could be adjusted to create the highly enriched uranium needed for nuclear weapons.
