On June 8, North Korea had its central news agency publish a statement that discredits the warnings of sanctions because of its nuclear testing and missile launches.

In an official release form the Korean News Agency, North Korea called Japan’s sanction warnings a “behavior of those who are taken aback by the dynamic advance of the Korean people to build a great prosperous and powerful nation.”

This response came after Japan warned North Korea of sanctions by the UN Security Council on Monday.

In addition to this, a commentary published in the state-run Minju Joson newspaper yesterday gave further fuel to the discussion mentioning the possibility of a “merciless offensive” for the sake of maintaining the “dignity” of the country. The commentary warned about their “nuclear deterrent” being a “strong defensive means...as well as a merciless offensive means to deal a just retaliatory strike to those who touch the country’s dignity and sovereignty even a bit” as reported by Associated Press.

Specialists on Korea’s previous nuclear testing found this series of nuclear testing to be linked with the declining health state of Kim Jong Il and a presumed “handoff of power” towards his son, Kim Jong Un, as told by Moon Hong-Silk, a researcher working for the institute for National Security Strategy in Seoul told towards the Los Angeles Times.
