Heavy rains have been falling in China’s Chongqing city since July 16th. Official reports say the floods have killed 42 people with 12 still missing, though the actual figures may be much higher. Local hydraulic, electric, transportation and telecommunication systems have been seriously damaged. The total damage bill is at least 340 million U.S. dollars.
According to local residents, the floods have destroyed everything, from cattle and crops to houses. However, state officials have not sent a representative to assess the damages. During a phone interview, the local government office admitted to NTDTV that they don’t know the details of the flood. They only work on reconstruction.
Local residents say they are extremely disappointed with the officials’ total lack of response or support. They are left to cope with the damage without assistance.
